Classes don’t begin until September 7th, but Morristown-Beard School has been buzzing with activity as athletes returned to campus to participate in Crimson Week – the first fall sports practices for the 2010 season.
08-21-2010 MBS to Kick Off Apple iPad Pilot Program
In September, six Morristown-Beard School teachers will be giving their students Apples instead of the other way around, as 60 MBS students begin using Apple iPads both inside and outside of their classrooms.

Morristown-Beard senior Clarence Williams '11 presented a 50-minute documentary, "Brilliance or Buffoonery?" at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival on July 28th.

A group of students from the Morristown-Beard production of "Hello, Dolly!" had a great time on June 8th at the 15th Annual Paper Mill Rising Star Awards which honors participation and achievement in New Jersey high school musicals.

Congratulations to senior Kelly Wilson '10, whose independent film "The Civil Rights Movement from King to Obama: Mission Accomplished?" was recognized by the Morris County Psychological Association (MCPA) at their annual awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 2nd at the Hamilton Park Conference Center in Florham Park.

Congratulations to the MBS varsity baseball team which captured the Non-Public North Group B State Championship on June 1st following a 9-6 victory over St. Mary's of Rutherford.
05-25-2010 MBS Community Enjoys Totton Golf & Crimson Night
The 33rd Larry Totton Golf Classic & Crimson Night was recently led by Event Chair Moira O’Connell and Golf Chair Rob Howarth, and was a huge success thanks to the very generous support of MBS parents, alumni and friends. The event, hosted by the Crimson Club, not only raised funds for MBS student-athletes and the athletic program, but it also raised school spirit and a sense of community.

Morristown-Beard School held its Middle School Academic and Spring Sports Awards Ceremony on May 21st in Founders Hall to honor students for excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

For the second year in a row, the Morristown-Beard girls’ lacrosse team defeated Stuart Country Day School to capture the Prep B Championship.

The Upper School student art exhibit, showcasing the creative diversity of Morristown-Beard’s visual art students, is currently on display in the first- and second-floor lobbies of Founders Hall.

Graduates from the Beard School, the Morristown School, and Morristown-Beard School gathered on campus from May 13th – 15th to reunite with old friends and enjoy a full slate of activities as part of Alumni Weekend 2010.
05-14-2010 Seventh Graders Enjoy Lunch at Resto
Chef Robert Ubhaus received high praise from The New York Times, The Star-Ledger and others when he opened his French bistro, Resto, in Madison two years ago and his more casual restaurant, Rob’s Bistro, last year. Now Chef Ubhaus’ cuisine has garnered high marks from another group of discriminating critics - Morristown-Beard seventh graders.

The talents of Morristown-Beard students and faculty will take center stage in Founders Hall on Thursday, May 20th as the School holds its third annual Spring Arts Festival from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come for an hour or stay to enjoy the whole roster of performances!

The Morristown-Beard School production of “Hello, Dolly!” has been recognized with three nominations and three honorable mention citations in the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards for Excellence in the Production of High School Musicals.

Planning for the 33rd Larry Totton Golf Classic & Crimson Night is in full swing. The event, presented by The Crimson Club, will be held on Monday, May 24th at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown.

The spirit of volunteerism has become synonymous with Morristown-Beard School and its mission. To assist students on their journey towards becoming productive and responsible citizens, the school requires community service of all students in grades 9-12. As a result of their volunteer efforts, students are doing more than gaining personal satisfaction and self-confidence; they are enriching their communities and transforming the lives of those around them.

The best-kept secret on the Morristown-Beard School campus is a secret no more. At an emotional yearbook dedication ceremony on Friday, May 7th, editors Michael Lorenz ’10 and Emily Young ’10 announced that the 2010 edition of “Salmagundi” was dedicated to Learning Center Co-Director Carol McGough.

04-30-2010 Three Students Inducted into Cum Laude Society
Three Morristown-Beard School students were inducted into The Cum Laude Society at a special dinner in Founders Hall on April 27th. The students are: senior Alexander Kronfeld ’10, junior Emily Price ’11 and senior Emily Young ’10.
04-29-2010 Bottle Rockets Make a Splash in Science Class
It’s one of those science labs that seems far too fun to be educational. Bottle rockets – or water rockets – have been a source of entertainment for years, but they can also be a valuable teaching tool, helping students understand the principles of aeronautics.
04-29-2010 Bartner, Johnson Ready to Take Their Game to Next Level
After enjoying success at Morristown-Beard School, several senior athletes are planning to take their game to the next level in college. MBS senior Stephanie Bartner ’10 was recruited to play soccer at Franklin & Marshall College while Shanice Johnson ’10 signed a Letter of Intent to run track at La Salle University.

04-28-2010 French & Spanish Honor Societies Induct Members
Eight Morristown-Beard students were inducted into the French and Spanish Honor Societies at a special ceremony on campus on April 28th. To be eligible for induction, students must earn at least an A- average for the past three semesters of study in the language and achieve honor roll status during those same semesters. Candidates must be enrolled at least at the sophomore level.

More than 30 members of the Morristown-Beard community recently participated in the Lu Huggins Wheelchair Walk to benefit the Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack-Gladstone.

You couldn’t blame members of the MBS community for humming “Kung Fu Fighting” as they exited Founders Hall after Morning Meeting on Friday. Morristown-Beard School’s International Week celebration culminated on Friday, April 23rd with a high-kicking, board-splitting performance by members of the New Jersey Martial Arts Academy.

All members of the MBS community in the New York Metropolitan Area are invited to join us for a festive evening of cocktails in New York City on Wednesday, May 5th. The event will be held at The New York Racquet and Tennis Club, 370 Park Avenue in Manhattan from 7 to 9 p.m.

On April 20th, Morristown-Beard School hosted presentation by technology expert Sree Sreenivasan on “Smarter Social Media: How Teachers, Administrators and Parents Can Make the Most of Social Networking Without Going to War With Their Kids.” This practical, tip-filled session was sponsored by Parents’ Associations of New Jersey Independent Schools (PANJIS) and New Jersey SEEDS.

04-16-2010 Boys' Hockey Team Wins League Sportsmanship Award
After capturing their fourth straight Prep Championship, their second consecutive Mennen Cup title and a host of all-league awards, the Morristown-Beard boys’ varsity ice hockey team has added another award for the trophy case. On April 11th, the Crimson were presented the Spike Billings Team Sportsmanship Award.
04-16-2010 Middle School Stages a Wonderful "Wonderland"
Audience members were taken on an entertaining journey down the rabbit hole to a whimsical world of talking cats, dancing flowers and armies of cards as Morristown-Beard Middle School students presented a modern, musical version of “Alice in Wonderland.” This popular story, based on the writings of Lewis Carroll, was staged in Founders Hall on April 15th and was clearly a wacky and wonderful hit with the audience.

In partnership with United Jewish Communities of MetroWest, Morristown-Beard School hosted 12 exchange students from Israel on April 15th.

This year, Morristown-Beard School has embarked on a School-wide sustainability program and is committed to building green in the future. All members of the community are invited to the School’s 2010 Lehman Lecture, “Taking the L.E.E.D.: The Whys and Hows of Building Green” on Thursday, May 13th at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall.
04-14-2010 Language Students Demonstrate Fluency in Fun
For the fourth year in a row, Morristown-Beard School hosted a Foreign Language Day Consortium event for area middle school students, and the fun was certainly not lost in translation. The event, held on April 14th, consisted of educational games and exercises that celebrated the linguistic heritages of French, Spanish and Latin.
04-12-2010 Auschwitz Survivor Shares Her Story
As part of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Holocaust survivor Tova Friedman visited Morristown-Beard School on April 12th to share her emotional story with students and faculty. The visit was coordinated through Morristown-Beard senior Breena Beck ’10 and her family.
04-07-2010 Venture Down the Rabbit Hole for Middle School Musical
Get ready to travel down the rabbit hole and explore a world of talking cats, dancing flowers and armies of cards as Morristown-Beard Middle School students present a modern, musical version of “Alice in Wonderland.” This popular story is based on the writings of Lewis Carroll and will be presented in Founders Hall on Thursday, April 15th at 8:30 a.m. for MBS Middle School classes and at 7:30 p.m. for friends and family. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.

More than 70 Morristown-Beard students participated in the 61st annual American Mathematics Contest 12 and the 11th annual American Mathematics Contest 10, which were held on campus on February 9th and February 24th.

From March 10th – 12th, the Morristown-Beard Eighth Grade Class visited Washington D.C., where they toured national landmarks and museums and participated in many exciting activities.

Sure, we all know that St. Patrick’s Day is next week, and Passover and Easter are quickly approaching as well. But the Morristown-Beard Mathematics Department was singing the praises of a different, more obscure holiday when they took the podium at Morning Meeting on March 12th.
03-10-2010 DePoalo Named NJ Devils Player of the Month
Congratulations to Morristown-Beard senior forward Dan DePoalo ’10, who was named a New Jersey Devils High School Player of the Month for February. Winners are based on nominations received from ice hockey coaches throughout the state and voted on by local media.

The Parents' Association spring fundraiser, "Night Under the Stars," was held on Saturday, March 6th, and was a tremendous success thanks to the leadership of co-chairs Janet Flinn and Valerie Riback, and the many parent volunteers who devoted their time, creative talents and lots of energy.

03-08-2010 "Hello, Dolly!" Captivates Audiences at MBS
Jerry Herman's popular musical “Hello, Dolly!” marched into Morristown-Beard from March 3rd – 6th, and it was performed brilliantly by Morristown-Beard Upper School students. The show was the first full musical production staged in Founders Hall, and it captivated audiences from start to finish.
03-08-2010 Crimson Win Mennen Cup, Advance in States
The Morristown-Beard boys' ice hockey team captured its second consecutive Mennen Cup title with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Morris Knolls on February 28th.

Middle School students and faculty were surprised to find Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and several other Founding Fathers walking the hallways on March 2nd.
03-06-2010 Quiz Show Team Ready to Compete on March 9th
After a thrilling last-minute victory over Wardlaw-Hartridge last fall, the Morristown-Beard School New Jersey Challenge Academic Team is ready to compete once again. The team, consisting of Brandon Baron ’11, Scott Geron ’10, Mackenzie Keck ’11, Alex Kronfeld ’10 and Jason Schunkewitz ’10, will travel to NEP Studio 33 in Manhattan on Tuesday, March 9th for a second-round – and possibly third-round – match of “The Challenge.”
