On Friday, June 12th, Morristown-Beard School held its 2009 “Moving Up” Ceremony on the MBS campus. Although rain forced this year’s ceremony indoors, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of those gathered in Founders’ Hall.

06-11-2009 MBS Welcomes Randy Velischek as Hockey Coach
Morristown-Beard School is pleased to announce the hiring of Randy Velischek as head coach of the varsity boys’ ice hockey team. Velischek is a former defenseman who played for 11 years in the National Hockey League with the New Jersey Devils, the Quebec Nordiques and the Minnesota North Stars.

Julie Beckman ’91 returned to her alma mater on May 15th to accept the Morristown-Beard School Distinguished Alumnus Award and to speak to students and faculty about her experiences as an architect. Beckman and her husband, Keith Kaseman, designed both the Pentagon Memorial in Washington, DC as well as the memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia in Nacogdoches, Texas.

The spirit of volunteerism has become synonymous with Morristown-Beard School and its mission. To assist students on their journey towards becoming productive and responsible citizens, the school requires community service of all students in grades 9-12. As a result of their volunteer efforts, students are doing more than gaining personal satisfaction and self-confidence; they are enriching their communities and transforming the lives of those around them.

The event is free and the entire community is invited to attend.

Twenty-three Morristown-Beard students were inducted into the French and Spanish Honor Societies at a special ceremony on campus on April 29th. To be eligible for induction, students must earn at least an A- average for the past three semesters of study in the language and achieve honor roll status during those same semesters. Candidates must be enrolled at least at the sophomore level.

For the third year in a row, Morristown-Beard School hosted a Foreign Language Day Consortium event for area middle school students, and the fun was certainly not lost in translation. The event, held on April 22nd, consisted of educational games and exercises that celebrated the linguistic heritages of Latin, French and Spanish.

On April 16th and 17th, the Morristown-Beard English Department hosted this year’s visiting writer, Megan Abbott. Abbott is the Edgar-winning author of the novels Die a Little, The Song Is You and the 2008 Edgar winner, Queenpin. Her new novel, Bury Me Deep, is scheduled for release in July 2009.

Morristown-Beard freshman cellist Dammy Adeoti has been accepted into the New Jersey All-State Intermediate Orchestra. The orchestra is organized by the New Jersey Music Educators' Association (NJMEA), and is comprised of students in grades 7-9.

Following successful ice hockey seasons, Morristown-Beard sophomore Sarah Bayersdorfer and senior Bobby Yannotta were both recently honored with state-wide awards. Bayersdorfer was named the Star-Ledger’s Player of the Year, while Yannotta was named the New Jersey Devils High School Player of the Month.

Morristown-Beard sophomores Clarence Williams, Sal Sclafani and Quentin Ong are getting ready to rub shoulders with the filmmaking elite. The three students created an 8-minute mobster movie, “Johnny Wong, Volume I,” which was accepted to the Garden State Film Festival and will be shown at the event in Asbury Park this April.

The Morristown-Beard boys' ice hockey team avenged last year's loss to Randolph High School as they defeated the Rams, 4-2, on February 28th to capture their sixth Mennen Cup Championship. The win gave MBS their first Mennen Cup title since 2006. It marked the first time since 1983 that the Crimson won both the Prep Tournament and the Mennen Cup title in the same year.

On February 26th, students in Mr. Kamil’s History of the Middle East class learned about the Suez Crisis from local expert Brian Forbes. Mr. Forbes has written several papers about the conflict between Israel and its neighbors and is the unofficial Rutgers University authority on the topic.

Six Morristown-Beard Middle School students recently participated in a volleyball tournament with students from several area schools. The event was hosted by Newark Academy and was part of a middle school consortium that also includes Oak Knoll, The Frelinghuysen School, Oratory Prep, Delbarton, Central Middle School and St. Virgil's School.

Tickets are now completely sold out for the Upper School musical, LUCKY STIFF, which will be performed from Wednesday through Saturday evenings, March 4th through March 7th at 8:00 p.m. and Friday afternoon, March 6th at 3:30 p.m. This is the last major production that the Performing Arts Department will stage in Wilkie Hall before moving into the new MBS Performing Arts Center!

Twenty-three years ago, on February 10, 1986, the day after Halley’s Comet came closest to the sun – the Morristown-Beard community celebrated by burying a time capsule - filled with school memorabilia, photos and student essays – in Senior Circle. MBS faculty and staff will open the time capsule in 2061, the next time Halley’s Comet will be visible to the human eye.

02-11-2009 Middle School Students Explore "Life in Space"
Ten Morristown-Beard Middle School students recently participated in “Life in Space,” a special program presented by the traveling scientists of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The event was hosted by Oratory Prep and was part of a middle school consortium which includes area schools such as Oak Knoll, Newark Academy, The Frelinghuysen School and St. Virgil’s School.

It may be the middle of winter, but who says that all of the bowl games are over? Morristown-Beard School’s Quiz Bowl team was recently in action for an all-day competition at Half Hollow Hills High School in Long Island. Nearly 60 teams competed in this regional event.

01-23-2009 Donate Blood at MBS on Wednesday, February 25th
Morristown-Beard School is hosting its 21st Annual Blood Drive on Wednesday, February 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Main Gymnasium on campus. Members of the community are encouraged to participate. Anyone 17 years of age or older is eligible to donate blood.

01-21-2009 French Penpal Visits Morristown-Beard School
Soni Dougherty’s 7th grade French students recently started a penpal program with students from the European School in Strasbourg, France. On Tuesday, January 20, the Morristown-Beard students not only received their first group of letters, but they also enjoyed a visit by Strasbourg student Samuel Bourdages, who hand-delivered the packet.

Morristown-Beard School is pleased to announce the hiring of Timothy Fell as head football coach. Fell comes to MBS from Seton Hall Prep, where he has served as head coach of the freshman team for the past eight years, and an assistant with the varsity team for two years.
