Girls' Ice Hockey Captures WIHLMA Title
The Morristown-Beard girls’ ice hockey team captured its third Women's Ice Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic (WIHLMA) title in four years on February 20th as senior defenseman Charlotte McAuley '10 scored a goal in the second overtime of the finals to lift the Crimson to a 5-4 victory over Portledge (N.Y).
This was the third year in a row that Morristown-Beard met Portledge in the WIHLMA finals, and once again the contest was decided by a single goal. This year's game was a back-and-forth see-saw battle with the lead changing hands three times in the end. Neither team led by more than a single goal at any time during the game.
Portledge out-shot Morristown-Beard 15-3 in the overtime periods due to penalties, but could not beat MBS freshman goalie Katherine Chester, who finished with 36 saves. "Katherine really stood tall, stopping breakaways and point blank shots while we were shorthanded in the overtime," said Head Coach Bruce Driver.
It was a true team effort for MBS, which had five different goal scorers. Alyssa Bufis tallied a goal and two assists in the contest, while Sarah Bayersdorfer, Brette Brier and Charlotte McAuley each had a goal and an assist for the Crimson, who finished the season with a stellar 18-2 record. Justine Wnek also scored a goal and Allie Aiello and Samantha Vicari added assists in the game.
The Crimson advanced to the finals after handing Rye Country Day School an 8-1 loss in the semi-finals.
