Quiz Show Team Ready to Compete on March 9th
After a thrilling last-minute victory over Wardlaw-Hartridge last fall, the Morristown-Beard School New Jersey Challenge Academic Team is ready to compete once again. The team, consisting of Brandon Baron ’11, Scott Geron ’10, Mackenzie Keck ’11, Alex Kronfeld ’10 and Jason Schunkewitz ’10, will travel to NEP Studio 33 in Manhattan on Tuesday, March 9th for a second-round – and possibly third-round – match of “The Challenge.”
“We have been preparing intensely for Tuesday and we ran a mock competition on Sunday, March 7th in the Chapel as a simulated match,” said Mark Hartman, who serves as the group’s advisor along with Kyle Brescher.
The team scrimmaged against an MBS faculty squad comprised of Dr. Curtis, Mark Hartman, John Mascaro, Jack Bartholomew and Tim Hannigan and they fared extremely well. In fact, the students won a Dress-Down Day for the MBS community by defeating the faculty squad.
Morristown-Beard will face off against Ocean Township in their second round match of “The Challenge.” If they advance, they will most likely compete against the powerful East Brunswick squad.
“We know we’re going to be underdogs again and that’s fine. We’re confident and we’ve logged a lot of practice hours,” said team captain Brandon Baron. “For the past few weeks, we’ve been practicing four days a week, about two hours a day.”
In addition to the coaching from their advisors, the team has been working with faculty members Alan Cooper, Jack Bartholomew, Tim Hannigan and Mark Jones to brush up on their mythology, physics, European history and geography.
Baron says the team is really looking forward to the rush that comes with competition.
“It’s the thrill of having knowledge come to you quickly,” said Baron. “When you get the question right, it’s exhilarating.”
The results of Morristown-Beard’s match(es) on Tuesday will again be a well-guarded secret until the TV show airs sometime in the next two months. To learn more about “The Challenge,” and to watch Morristown-Beard’s first-round victory over Wardlaw-Hartridge, visit www.powertolearn.com.
